Postgraduate Medical Education Regulations, 2020



The Board of Governors in super session of Medical Council of India, on 22nd July 2020, vide notification no. MCI-18(1)/2020-Med./110890. has notified the Postgraduate Medical Education Regulations, 2020 in order to amend the Postgraduate Medical Education Regulations, 2000

As per the existing regulations, only a department having an independent academic entity of a teaching institution, consisting of one or more units, each having the prescribed minimum strength of faculty, staff and beds was recognised for Post Graduate training.

After the notification Super speciality courses can also be started in the Independent parent broad speciality Department, subject to fulfilling the staff, infrastructure and clinical material requirement for that Super speciality course.

But, the dedicated Faculty for the Super-Speciality course shall not be considered for allocation of postgraduate seats in the Broad specialty course.

Not more than three Super-Speciality courses can be started in parent Broad Speciality Department.

However, the following Super speciality courses cannot be started in the Independent parent broad speciality Department:

  • Cardiology
  • Endocrinology
  • Medical Gastroenterology
  • Medical Oncology
  • Neonatology
  • Nephrology
  • Neurology
  • Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Paediatric Surgery
  • Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
  • Surgical Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Urology/Genitourinary surgery
